Day 3, overnight

[Just before the time votes generally get announced, the smoke alarm in the basement starts giving an ear-splitting buzz. Hope you weren't trying to get some quiet time in your dressing room, since for a good five, ten minutes, it is not very quiet.

[Then, thankfully, the alarm shuts off abruptly. A moment later, Little Debbie herself comes shrieking over the monitors. She looks furious.]

What in the world do you devil squares think you're doing!? You had to do this today? Really? First, the cold fishest of dates, then the world's most boringest voting, and now you're messing up our stuff? Don't you know what all we're dealing with here!?

Seriously, if it wasn't such an important day, you guys'd be in sooo much trouble! So give your praises for my my sweet fucking demeanor-slash-absolute lack of time right now for dealing with this dollar bin garbage, and start getting your keisters in gear! Romance is a legitimate genre, just look at the book sales! And I want a piece of that Fabio pie! So you nutty buddies are gonna get out there, you're gonna date, there's gonna be some sparks, and we're gonna get top trending numbers tomorrow, or else!

[The girl stomps her foot, near tantrum; Swiss Miss takes over.]

Whatever you think you've done, it did not work. No more mini-marshmallows until you improve. Marshmallows are for closers.

[Yusuke turns his attention back to working on his painting, and shakes his head.]

No, it's fine. Hearing your feedback has only encouraged me to complete it.

You were considering scrapping it? What's the problem?

Oh, it's nothing like that. It's simply good to hear that the person the piece is intended for approves of it.

[Though he's no intention of going far; now that he's had a excuse to to go the game room he'll just grab a book and read. No one's ever made him something like this (Mokuba doesn't count) , and it's...something he doesn't mind being around for, he decides]

[Yusuke goes back to work in silence for another hour or so. The majority of the work is done, but he does need to complete the night sky, which he paints as intricately studded with stars, as well as a distant full moon. From there it's just a case of adding light tones and shading, making sure the scenery is consistent with the sky.

Once he's done, he gets to his feet and stands back to view the painting from a distance, as an ordinary viewer would see it.]

Hmm... I believe it is done. [He sits back down and picks up his brush one last time, adding his signature in an inconspicuous area at the bottom.]

[kaiba starts at the noise, not like he was dozing or anything! it was just, uh, sudden, but either way he recovers quickly]

Done? Already? Can I take a look?

[wantsnudes]

[Luckily Yusuke was so absorbed he hadn't even noticed Kaiba dozing, so his pride is spared for now.]

Yes, of course. Just don't touch it; the paint is still drying.

[takes it in, for once letting himself actually look as impressed as he feels]

...You're sure you want to give it to me?

[Yusuke nods, smiling warmly.]

I'm sure. I would not have mentioned it if I hadn't made up my mind long before.

[and--for once--Kaiba doesn't argue. Yusuke's smile is a little too warm to meet for too long, but even as Kaiba drops his gaze he's smiling back, a little.]

...Alright.

A smile like that is a good look on you. I'm glad I got to see it.

[But he's happy that Kaiba finds it... motivating...? Whatever that means.]

[he really does seem at a loss for words, beginning and aborting several responses before finally saying something]

[Yusuke gives a short laugh, at that.]

I was not aware it was a skill that could be honed, so much as a natural product of one's appearance and personality. But, thank you.

I guess you're right. You can practice in a mirror, but it's not the same. You could say there's an art to it.

And, as in art, there are some smiles that are all the more precious due to their rarity.

In any case, I suppose I've taken enough of your time for the evening, Kaiba-san. You should get some rest.

[He's not sure what he's being thanked for, considering he was the one who was supposed to be expressing gratitude, but he'll take it.]

Burdens are easier when shared. Under trying circumstances, it helps to find solace in others.

That's not something that comes naturally to me. But I suppose I can see your point.

[Yusuke nods in understanding.]

For those accustomed to solitude, it does not come naturally. But it's something I have recently learned to be of great benefit.

How many lessons did it take for you?

[wantsnudes]

One truly harsh lesson, and that was when I discovered the truth about Sensei's vain and greedy nature. I had no one I could count on but my friends in that time, and so, that was when I came to trust them with everything, instead of choosing to isolate myself further.

Then, after that incident, my mind became clouded, and I struggled to produce art. It was my friends once again who became those I could confide in. Like a brilliant ray of hope that pierces the darkness... they've all done so much for me. I produced a painting on that very subject, and it became my finest work to date.

...And now, I've met you, Kaiba-san. [He looks back at his painting.] A cold, powerful waterfall, seemingly fixed and immovable... and yet suffused with the soft glow of the moon and stars. I'm sure that's the perfect painting for you.
