[ He raises the hand that's not on her shoulder to her forehead, just to make sure she's not kidding; once he feels that she's cool, he drops it, nodding in satisfaction. Then he looks at his shoes. ]

I can't say whether or not it does.

Why not? After all, no matter what happens here, it's done at home.

[One way or another. Even if she doesn't win, it's still done.]

We don't know what everyone's prizes will be.

[exequte]

Even if something changed at home because of someone winning, it still wouldn't matter any more, would it? So, either way.

Why wouldn't it matter?

[ He picks at the straps on his boots. ]

[exequte]

If nothing changes, I'll already be dead, and if it does, hopefully none of this would have happened at all.

[jinglebros]

Do I want to ask which you'd rather?

[exequte]

You really think I'd rather be dead?

[She looks away again, mouth a tight little line.]

[jinglebros]

...at this point, I'm just scared.

[ He pulls his arm back and curls up a little too. ]

[exequte]

I'm sorry.

[Her voice is very soft]

This is all my fault.

[jinglebros]

[ He glances at her. ]

Why?

[exequte]

I was supposed to know what to do.

[jinglebros]

And I was supposed to carry it out flawlessly.

[exequte]

You did!

[jinglebros]

If I did, you wouldn't have faded away.

[ He mutters something else under his breath. ]

[exequte]

What?

Santa, you couldn't do things I never told you about!

[jinglebros]

You told me enough.

[ Pause. ]

What didn't you tell me about?

[exequte]

[There's a long, long pause after that question, long enough that it probably seems like she's not going to answer. She does, finally, but doesn't look at him as she does.]

I don't know.

[jinglebros]

[ He sighs and reaches out, ruffling her hair. ]

Not at all, huh.

[ He doesn't like the sound of that. ]

[exequte]

Maybe I couldn't remember before, either. Maybe that's why I didn't tell you.

[jinglebros]

[ It's not like Santa doesn't have memory problems too, but he's not gonna say that. She'll just feel worse. ]

You can't help it.

[exequte]

But if I can't then you can't blame yourself for it either! If it's not my fault, it's doubly not yours.

[And, really, it is still her fault.]

[jinglebros]

Okay, fine.

[ Except how it's really his. ]

[exequte]

I mean it. There was nothing you could have done differently.

[jinglebros]

Right. Okay.

[ He stops picking at his shoes and looks at her instead. ]

But where does that leave us now?
